So if you're Jade or someone else who's not turned on by the geekly stuff (ok, so she is, but it's more the ~I AM TYPING ON YOUR HEAD~ act than actually talking geeklyness) then you should probably go spank the monkey.
Ok, now that the lightweights are gone. Here's the plan - when my Thinkpad R40 of death does its press-5-keys-and-it-formats-and-reinstalls-everything-while-i-read-a-book-for-a-couple-of-hours act it automatically installs a metric shitload of useless IBM programs and processes that clutter up my shit and use up a largish swathe of memory. That is un-good.
So - This entry is for my benefit mostly - for my next reinstall - but I suppose other Thinkpad tweakers could find it through the all-powerful Goog and be able to benefit from the largish amount of Goog-ing I'm about to do.
At the moment on startup I have 24 processes running, they're tying up about an even 100MB worth of memory.
Following is a list of the services and processes that I'm removing via Start > Run > msconfig, and what they do, as best as I can find out.
AGRSMMSG.exe - Part of the modem driver. Considering that I am yet to use the modem on this computer this one is getting shitcanned. (2.5MB)
csrss.exe - Client/server runtime somethingorother. Looks kind of important. It can stay.
ctfmon.exe - User interfaces for Stephen Hawkings and other hippies. Buh bye. (2.8MB)
Explorer.exe - Yes, I know there are alternate shells out there, but they = a lot of stuffing around, and explorer hardly ever crashes in XP, so it's staying. Despite using 16.6MB of ram while sitting there doing nothing, it's staying.
EzEjMnAp.exe - Stupid peripheral device ejecting application for those too retarded to use the XP one. Quote: "The IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility makes removing multiple devices from your computer faster and easier by enabling you to stop more than one device at once, rather than stopping each device individually". From the naming of the exe I would suggest that some IBM exec's 13 year old son wrote this one. Bai Bai. (3.1MB)
ibmmessages.exe - I'll let my new buddies at SysInfo.org explain this one:
Allows IBM to push messages onto users' computers. Quote: "The Access IBM Message Center can display messages to inform you about software and solutions available from IBM as well as messages from IBM eSupport"
Everybody, repeat after me; "FUCK YOU IBM AND THE 7.7MB HORSE YOU'RE TRYING TO RIDE INTO MY COMPUTER ON". DELETED. (7.7MB)
jusched.exe - oooh. This one isn't from IBM! Amazing. It's still a useless hog of 2.5 megs though. Bap Bow.
NPDTRAY.EXE - Holycarp. No actually useful information shows up on a Google search, but in my incredibly resourceful right clicking of the actual program file I have divined that it is the "TBM Thinkpad Presentatino Director Tray Utility" icon. Yes, in exchange for 2.7MB of my precious RAM I can have an icon sitting in my taskbar that does the same thing as the "power options" control panel item which is hidden aaaaaaaaaaall the way over there in the control panel. Note to self - prevent this process from loading
QCWLICON.EXE - "Used by IBM Thinkpad laptops with built-in wireless card (802.11). System Tray icon that provides a shortcut to "Wireless Connection Status" and allows to turn WL on and off". Nope, not useful. I wonder if IBM have labelled all the useless programs in all caps. That would make it easier. (8MB)
SynTPEnh.exe - Enables advanced features of the touchpad. I use the touchpad scrolling thing all the time, so this one can stay and disprove my StuPiDCapS theory.
SynTPLpr - apparently something else along the lines of the above. Why the hell they need two processes to do this I will never know. I don't want to know. I just want the badness to stop. WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST BE FRIENDS.
tfswctrl.exe - Happarently this is required for the DVD drive to read burnt CDs. I seem to recall that I removed that useless DLA stuff last time though and it worked perfectly. It's days like these; that make us happy; like a puppy getting lucky; with deleting crappy-free programs (3.7MB)
TP98TRAY.EXE - I believe this is a tray icon for the Thinkpad Configuration program. I can access this with 3 clicks if one day I decide it needs opening. Worth 3.7MB? I don't think so.
TPHKMGR - A process that starts up the not-particularly-useful Access IBM utility when the -gasp- Access IBM button is pressed. Once again, 3 mouse clicks will open this program for me, and save a luscious 4.4MB.
TpKmspMm - Hotkey thing for when using an external keyboard with the laptop. I have never used an external keyboard with my laptop, never intend to. Despite this IBM have decided to allocate 0.5% of my RAM to this eventuality. Tut tut. I wonder if this will stop the bloody numlock from coming on every time I connect to the laptop with Remote Desktop.
TPONSCR.exe - Onscreen display thing for when volume is turned up or down or muted or whathaveyou. I'm willing to sacrifice 2.5Megs to this.
TpScrex.exe - Screen expansion whatsit. Never been given the option as far as I know. They've installed this and then hidden it from me or something. BAD IBM, BAD.
Hokay. Well that's everything in the processes part of Meesta Task Manager, but wait! There's a whooooole load more things showing up in MSCONFIG. I wonder where they're hiding. Actually, I don't care where they're hiding, but I'm going to KEEEEEEEEEL them.
Ati2mdxx.exe - Apparently an ATI display driver tray icon, but I see no such icon. Naughty. Go home. Bad puppy.
atiptaxx.exe - as above. Slightly different wording. Blip.
sgtray - StorageGuard! From Veritas! Thanks guys for supplying me with a Free Utility that Integrates with Backup MyPC. If I ever Use BackUp MyPC then heck, I might even use StorageGuard as well! Awesome! Fuckoff!
S3Tray2 - Another ATI settings thingy that doesn't seem to appear. Rapture. Gone.
Hokay. That seems to be about it for now. Time for a restart to a) See if I've broken anything and b) Check how much memory I've freed up...
a) Loaded up fine. Nothing outwardly borked.
b) Only 10 processes running on startup now. They add up to a much lighter 43.4MB. Now I know that this doesn't mean that I've freed up the full 57MB difference, I read enough Dan to be aware that the numbers under Mem Usage and Page File Usage aren't really that important. But I feel much better about my new improved 10 processes and Sleek Fuckin System Tray.
Well wasn't that interesting and informative. Yes? Well aren't you a good monkey. You get a prize for sticking it through all this time. Not like all of those slack non geekness people. Oh, and Jade. Who probably at least skimmed the rest of this stuff to make sure that the geekness thing wasn't a smokescreen to divert her away from a post full of boobies.
Nice post. I can't seem to access tina masturbating.
I need it for art.
